It’s only when you’ve reached the very bottom

It’s only when you’ve reached the very bottom that you find the momentum to push yourself back to the surface. By the same token, I find that the most painful experiences bring out the best in me. The intensity of excruciating pain eventually converts into determination, evolves into productivity and soon—deeper happiness. Though heartbreak has nearly broken me a few times, I’ll always be grateful for the most meaningful lessons it teaches me. It forces me to grow in the most important ways. I welcome the pain, knowing I get to meet a better version of myself on the other side. . If you’re reading this and are in the same place, I hope that as you inevitably recover, you become as excited as I am at the thought of what you’ll do next with the best version of yourself yet.

Photo/painting?

Instead of using gradients and ellipses to edit large areas of my photos like I’ve been doing the last few years, I’ve been carefully painting in the details of multiple versions of the original, and combining it all into one photo. It takes a long time, but it’s the same cathartic therapy I feel when I paint on canvas. It’s also allowed me to provide even more detail than I have before—like being given an extended word limit in a book. I’ve never really nailed down a personal style until practicing this technique. I’ve always pushed the boundaries of purity and realism, and have often been asked “yea but did it RLY look like that?🤪” And to that I’ve always wanted to say—no, it probably didn’t “really” look like that, but my memory of the captured moment looked and felt that way to me. It’s what I believe/hope you’d feel too if you went there. In this particular photo, I took a dip into what I didn’t realize was a mineral packed hot spring (I thought hot springs were just warm ponds). When my skin soaked up the (literally) mood-boosting minerals in this hot spring, my body felt high. The sulfates in the spring relieved my pain; the lithium calmed me down; and the magnesium gave me energy. I didn’t know all of this until I looked up what was happening to my skin when I got back to my car. All I felt at the time was that my skin was tingling, and my mind felt clear. I also felt a burst of happiness that had me floating on my back and staring into the sky.. As a result, what would seem like grey skies in a raw photo, seemed bright in my mind. The colors of the trees were more vivid, and I could see the air bubbles rising from the water. You can’t see all of that in a raw, unedited photo. What I’ve done here is what I want my future photos to look like: a painting of my memory; a preview of what you’ll feel if you visit the destination. It may not be true to “reality”, but I believe each person’s view of the world is often distorted by how they feel, and what I want people to see in my photos, is what it looks like from the perspective of someone in a good mood; someone who only notices the beauty in life.

Took this photo in Torres del Paine four years ago and have never been happy with my edits enough to post and leave it up. I decided to give it another try last week and reset it four times (in five hours) before deciding to stop editing altogether until I finished watching all the tutorials I’ve been putting off going through. After four days/ten hours of watching @maxrivephotography, @care4art and @danielkordan tutorials I’ve finally been able to get this photo closer to what I’ve always hoped it’d be. Big thank you to those artists who shared their game changing tools and techniques with the world 🙏

Not gonna lie I’m really freaking happy this photo is done 😂 I can’t let things go once I start working on them, and I began working on this photo, determined to finish it for the past week and now can finally get back to the rest of my to do list…

A little background on the photo - this was on day 4 of my 6-day backpacking trip through Patagnoia, where we hiked about 4mi from camp to see Cerro Espada and Cerro Hoja. At that point in my life, the only other mountains I’d seen were the Rockies in Colorado, so to see these beautiful purple peaks took my breath away. I can’t wait to go back again one day…

💠 I write a lot here, bc I love connecting with people through photography.. However I’m otherwise super quiet & shy in person 🤐
💠 During the hardest years of my life, I immersed myself in nature, brought my camera along & fell in love with landscape photography as a result.
💠 Before that, I spent about 7 years flipping a tech startup & took a few years off to travel after it sold.
💠 Before that, I was a freelance food photographer & sold flavored olive oil to make ends meet 🫒
💠 I made two perfect little humans and the 3 of us are all pisceans ♓️♓️♓️
💠 Mountains > Beaches.
💠 I turn 33 on 2/22/22
💠 I struggle w/ADHD & another mental disorder that gives me random bouts of energy & creativity; and adversely, bouts of slowness that I battle through. Hiking & Photography helps keep me stable.
💠 My favorite thing abt backpacking with friends, is getting to cook for them 🍳
💠 I don’t consider myself the smartest person out there, but I’m extremely driven. I pursue my goals obsessively & sometimes forget to eat or sleep until they’re completed.
