FRACTURED HEART

(1/1 EDITION AVAILABLE)

Fractured Heart

[View in Full Resolution on Foundation]

Despite its disfiguration, a fractured heart can love deeper than most. For once a fractured heart has been through the dark–just a glimpse of light can seem blindingly brilliant. Therefor, a fractured heart can appreciate everything that shines around it, just as one can only view the brilliance of an aurora at night, and not when the sun surrounds us with light.

The fractured heart in the lake of this 17-photo panorama blankets a fallen volcano that has been sleeping since it last erupted over 7,700 years ago. Though many assume it has fallen for good, scientists are sure it will erupt again one day. By the same token, when there is doubt that a fractured heart will ever love again–the assumption is false, for the love that remains in the heart lives on to thrive again one day. Though this volcano is vastly empty now, the small, ghost-like island on its’ surface is a reminder that life remains in spite of its inactivity. In the same way, a fractured heart may feel just as hollow and dormant, but its’ beat is undeniable, and so long as its’ beat lives on–so does its’ chance at finding love again. This image is proof that our appreciation of love and light grows deeper in the dark, and that when our hearts break–it is not only inevitable that we’ll love again one day, but that we’ll appreciate it more the next time around.

LOVELY INTERRUPTION

(1/1 EDITION AVAILABLE)

[View in Full Resolution on Foundation]

There is always light, even in our darkest moments. It may be faint or evanescent, but light is always present to shine hope into our lives. This photo was taken by a lake in a town that was plagued with forest fires during the time I visited. Each day, the sky and landscape was filled with so much fog that very little was visible beyond the tree line. The town’s beautiful mountains were not only hidden by the haze, but the light that normally lit the lake’s silt into its famous turquoise hue, shifted to grey. As time went on, it was uncertain that the fog would ever dissipate, just as fogs of uncertainty cloud our lives with doubt at times. However, on this hike around one of Banff’s most iconic lakes, an outpour of light interrupted the fog for a moment, illuminating the lake into cerulean for me to capture this 4-photo focus stack. In that moment–my doubt and disappointment was interrupted by a defying ray of hope. When fogs of uncertainty part to warm us with the light of hope, we are reminded that the absence of joy is just a temporary course. This photo is proof that when the time is right, light will interrupt our fogs of uncertainty, and that in time–those clouds will pass entirely.

 MOUNTAINEER

(1/1 EDITION AVAILABLE)

[View in Full Resolution on Foundation]

They say that “mountains have a way of humbling the overconfident”, but a mountaineer of the mind only grows stronger and gains confidence with every hardship it overcomes. As life’s mountains of adversity grow bigger and bigger for us to climb throughout the course of our lives, so does our strength and will to conquer them. Each time we rise to the occasion, we unlock another pitch in our climb; and when we anchor ourselves into it, we become closer and closer to the strongest version of ourselves. A mountaineer of the mind, is drawn to the world’s toughest challenges, and voraciously pursues them to grow stronger. Their spirit does not repel in the face of adversity, but instead, embraces it; for they know that they’ll meet a stronger version of themselves on the other side. As the woman in this photo finishes her first climb, she stares down her next mountain with confidence and eagerness to not only take its’ name, but more importantly–to evolve.  This photo represents the most resilient spirits in the world; the strongest mountaineers of life, who welcome and even seek out adversity just to watch themselves prevail. With relentless fortitude and solid conviction, life’s greatest “mountaineers” prove at each summit that their life’s ascension remains limitless.

JOLT

(1/1 EDITION AVAILABLE)

[View in Full Resolution on Foundation]

In the dark, you’ll discover those who will leave you in it, those who will stand with you, and those who will spark a fire to guide you out. Before I took this photo, I watched as two friends attempted to convince the third friend to jump in. The hesitant girl was terrified and worried that it’d be too cold, so her friends offered to jump in first to let her know that everything would be okay. A moment later, they jumped in together and rose to the surface with smiles and laughter. This image is proof that when we are paralyzed in fear, the love in our lives can guide us out. With their unconditional love–family and friends can jolt us from fear’s grip to help us begin living our lives again. They are proof that we are never alone in our struggle, and that we need only to look up and take their hands. “Jolt” represents the way love stimulates joy, releases us from fear, and promises adventure when we follow it out of the dark. The jolt of light in the distance, the jolt of courage the girls inspired in their friend, and the jolt of cheer that they felt when they hit the water, is what this image embodies to convey the beauty that emerges when we leap into the unknown and face our fears with love by our side.
