Oyamel's Tequila & Mezcal Festival

As March approaches, with Spring at its’ tail – welcome the warm season by diving into a tropical escape with exotic flavors and fragrances from the minds of Jose Andres and the Think Food Group Team. These next two weeks, from March 5th through 18th, Oyamel in DC is hosting their annual Tequila & Mezcal Festival, where they’ve created a variety of innovative cocktails to pair with a special menu that ‘highlights the flavors of Oaxaca and Jalisco in Mexico’.

Made with fresh pressed apples, ruby port, ginger, a cinnamon swizzle and a beautiful apple-chip flower – the Oaxacan Swizzle was one of my favorite drinks of the night. My friend on the other hand, enjoyed the High Tea, made with Los Nahuales reposado mezcal, chamomile tea, St. Germain elderflower liqueur, lemon, tobacco bitters, and Oaxacan chocolate ice that slowly melts chocolate into your drink as you sip. During the first week, Oyamel will be shaking up Mezcal mixed drinks from 4-6pm on Monday the 5th. Then, from Tuesday-Thursday, you are invited to a complimentary cocktail tasting with guest Mezcal producers. Afterwards, dine in and enjoy a four course meal prepared by Chef Omar Rodriguez, to be paired with even more Mezcal.

During the second week, enjoy a complimentary cocktail session, “Highlands vs. Lowlands: A Cocktail Story,” from 4 PM to 6 PM, which will ‘take guests on a tour of two main Tequila origins’. From Tuesday through Thursday, enjoy another cocktail session from 4-6pm, and another four course dinner to be paired with tequila. Reservations for dinner are required, and cost$90 per person.

In honor of the festival, Oyamel will also be offering special bar ‘antojitos’, perfect to savor while sipping Tequila or Mezcal.  Small plates served exclusively at the bar include: Garbanzos fritos, crispy roasted spiced garbanzo beans, and Alas de pollo con salsa naranjachicken wings in a sauce of orange, spices and chile pequin.

Above, (from top to bottom) you’ll see the ‘Chayotes guisados con salsa Jitomate’, which is sauteed mexican squash, cauliflower, swiss chard and tequila with tomato and chile arbol salsa. Below, you’ll see my favorite dish on the menu – the ‘Chalupas de ostiones en escabeche’, a traditional corn flour cake topped with pickled oysters, tomato salsa, lettuce and queso fresco. In the fourth photo you’ll see two plates of the most moist, and sauciest chicken wings of the night – the ‘Alas de pollo con salsa naranja’, chicken wings dressed with a spiced orange and chile pequin salsa. In what looks like a long shot glass, is the ‘Pozole de camaron’, a skewer of Jalisco-style shrimp and hominy soup – which will be served with Hawaiian head-on blue prawns, guajillo and ancho chiles, served with green cabbage, onion, radishes and lime.

Last, but not least – a few glasses of Tequila and Mezcal, with gorgeous pink lime-gelatin chasers.
