The King, The Bula & The Garlic Fry Mustache

I’m normally one of those girls who take a stack of napkins and politely wipe my mouth after just about every bite when I’m digging into a big, greasy cheeseburger – simply because I can’t stand the feeling of having hot grease rolling off the sides of my mouth. But let’s just say, when I first bit into the giant Bula Burger from Pearl’s Deluxe on the corner of Post & Jones in San Francisco one Friday evening – I couldn’t help but let all sense of self awareness slip, and leave my table manners way back in Virginia.

This is not a burger that allows you to pause between bites – you won’t even want to take a breath. With every sizzling mouthful of crispy bacon, melted swiss, juicy meat, and escaping drops of spicy pineapple teriyaki sauce – you’ll either be taking a bite, catching the sauce between your finger tips, or chasing down each mouthful with a sip of their sweet, creamy Nutella Milkshake.

Oh, and did I mention garlic fries?

That’s right – I said garlic fries. Not just garlic butter drizzled on fries, but fries with real chunks of roasted, minced garlic on top, packing each stick full of intense flavor.

As my¬†cousin so eloquently puts it, “it’s like drinking the inside of a Ferrero Rocher”.

If you’re as obsessed with this Italian candy as much as we are; or if you enjoy Nutella, (or any chocolate hazelnut flavored treats for that matter) try their Nutella milkshake for a sweet break between bites.

If the Bula Burger wasn’t already so delicious, I probably would have been eyeing my cousin’s choice of burger all night like this.

Actually, now that I think about it – ‘The King’ is something that I would normally enjoy; considering hot dogs and nacho cheese was pretty much my favorite food combination all during elementary school. And that’s pretty much what it is. Consisting of a 1/4 pound burger, ‘crowned’ with thick cheddar cheese, american cheese, and smothered in thousand island dressing with of course – a halved, grilled hot dog – this would have easily been the key to my heart. However, being on vacation and trying new things – I had to step out of the box and try something new, and I have to say – it was all well worth it. I’d honestly take a a half hour hike up and down the hills of San Francisco any day for any of these things we ordered; even if it’s just for that Nutella shake. And with everything being so tasty and wonderful – it’s no surprise that even Tyler Florence mentions Pearl’s Deluxe Burgers on ‘The Best Thing I Ever Ate’.

(My lovely, and oh so adorable cousin Olivia Lee. I love you!)

So take a moment to pause and indulge yourself every now and then. Forget the napkins, forget the utensils, forget your manners, and most of all – forget that there’s anyone around to watch you let loose and savor that delicious gourmet burger the way it was made for you to enjoy. Slowly in bliss, and without distraction.
